Sydney-based Lulu Liu is an internationally renowned virtuoso of the pipa, the Chinese lute, the history of which dates back more than 2,000 years.

Born in Shenyang, she is recognized as an outstanding exponent of the traditional repertoire as well as a leading interpreter of contemporary pipa music, including live improvisation, something few if any other pipa masters even attempt.

Lulu began playing the pipa at age six. She graduated from China's
Central Conservatory of Music, then taught the instrument at a Beijing
university for two years following her graduation. She then enrolled at the Australian Institute of Music. Lulu has performed in numerous cities in China, and in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and of course Australia, including at the world-famous Sydney Opera House.

In October 2007, she performed for an audience of 7,000 at the "World Peace" outdoor festival in South Korea. She was also featured on the long-running BBC Radio program "On The Wire."

In 2008 Lulu performed as part of one of the largest ongoing music events in the Sydney area, "Musica Viva."

To date, she has released one CD, "New Generation Pipa," and is currently preparing material for her second.
